The Museum of the Holy House of Mercy houses a fascinating collection of Catholic relics.

It has been around since 2001, drawing pilgrims from around the world who come to see displays, some of which date back to the 16^th century.

The museum followed many centuries later, though the Holy House of Mercy was the first to open in 1569 by Macau’s first Bishop. It was fashioned after an old Portuguese charity but, more importantly, served significant functions, especially establishing the first Western clinic and many social welfare services that exist up to the present day.

Another critical function of its establishment was to support widows and orphans of sailors who had passed away at sea.

At the Museum of the Holy House of Mercy, visitors can learn many other fascinating aspects of its history. However, a major highlight here is the original manuscript of the Commitment, which was handwritten in 1662. Many believe that this is the oldest item in all the archives.

Another interesting item is the skull of Dom Belchoir Carneiro, the former Bishop of Macau, whose skull was cut off in 1835. It remains a mystery to this day why his skull was separated from his body.

Other pieces inside the museum are the Sacred Art, which includes the Sacred Heart of Jesus statue from the early 19^th century, Our Lady of the Annunciation statue and the Crucified Christ, European ceramics, Japanese religious art, and much more.
