It takes place over two days every first weekend following Ash Wednesday, usually during February or March. Visitors can expect a sombre procession highlighting the 14 Stations of the Cross as it travels through Macau’s old streets, from St. Augustine’s Church to the Old City, then to the Cathedral of Macau during the overnight vigil. On Sunday night, the procession continues, passing Senado Square, St. Dominic’s Square, Rua do Campo, and Avenida de Praia Grande.

The Procession of the Passion of Our Lord, the God Jesus, is an Intangible Heritage in Macau. First initiated in 1708, it is now one of the most widely anticipated Lenten events. The faithful from all over the country travel to participate in the procession and sermons at various times throughout the weekend. This is a wonderful time to pray and thank Christ for giving up his life for mankind.

Cathedral Square usually gets a flurry of procession activity and is typically filled with devotees, especially during the event’s second day. Those interested in joining are advised to come in comfortable walking shoes so that you can easily follow the procession. Admission is free, and all ages are welcome, though remember it is a solemn and sombre ceremony.
