The main attraction on the hill is the Penha Church, established in 1622. It has a simple but beautiful style, surrounded by lush greens and trees. By 1837, the church was rebuilt together with the Bishop’s residence, which is right beside it. A statue of Our Lady of Lourdes is located in the church’s front courtyard, while on the steps leading to the hillside, you can find the grotto. This has become a popular wedding photoshoot location because of the majestic steps and stunning background.

Penha Hill, also known as Bishop Hill, is a beautiful place to visit if you want to get away from the typical glitzy casinos and tourists found in other popular locations in Macau. The scenery is truly unique and special, with lots to discover. Getting here requires quite a hike, so the best time to visit would be during a sunny day. This hill is one of the least visited destinations, so you are assured of tranquil time away.

From here, you can access many famous attractions. One is Nam Van Lake, one of Macau’s two man-made lakes. The lake’s perimeter is scenic for a walk or a jog, but the waters themselves are idyllic for relaxing water sports such as paddle boating or riding the duck bicycle. If you happen to visit during any of the local festivals, the lake is the best place to catch a fireworks display.

Penha Hill and its surroundings provide a quiet respite in Macau.
