Feast of the Drunken Dragon

English: Feast of the Drunken Dragon, Portuguese: Festividade do Dragão Embriagado, Traditional: 醉龍節, Simplified: 醉龙节

The Feast of the Drunken Dragon is a unique traditional festival in Macau that takes place every 8th day of the fourth lunar moon.

During this folk event, fishermen and coastal communities make the streets come alive with singing, dancing, and drinking as they carry wooden dragons.

The origins of this festival can be traced to the Qing Dynasty when villagers suffered from a great plague. They decided to transport a Buddha statue in the streets to pray to him when legend has it that a massive python from the river blocked the road. A Buddhist monk successfully defeated the snake by cutting it into three pieces and throwing it back into the river.

However, the snake’s remains flew into the sky instead of returning to the river. Not long after, the great plague ended, and all those who were sick miraculously recovered. Parts of the ground stained with the snake’s blood became fertile, so the people believed a sacred dragon had saved them. The Feast of the Drunken Dragon was born; this event was established to pay tribute to the dragon that saved the townsfolk, so they now celebrate it annually by drinking and dancing.

The best place to observe this festival is at the historic Senado Square, where celebrations begin as early as 9am. Local fishermen and fishermen’s associations come together to start the fun by offering longevity rice to the public-facing Red Market to share blessings with all.

The Drunken Dragon Parade then walks around town, passing through the Hong Kung Temple, Iao Hon Market, Red Market, A-Ma Temple, and many other heritage sites. Drinking alcohol is abundant – and welcome, too!

The Feast of the Drunken Dragon is a truly special event in Macau.
