Inside, you will find the shrine of Our Lady of Guia, whom the Portuguese have venerated for a long time as she is seen as the guardian of seafarers. In 1996, the Macanese government restored the chapel and discovered frescoes that told biblical stories through European-Chinese paintings. It’s a unique feature you won’t find in any other chapel or church in Macau.
After the restoration of the frescoes, which was led by a team of professionals, the Chapel Of Our Lady Of Guia was reopened in 2001. Today, it has become a major attraction for the religious. Aside from admiring the frescoes and praying inside, you can also take in the views. It takes quite a climb on a set of stairs to get there, but it’s worth it. You can learn more about the chapel and the art inside by visiting the new information centre that was built below the chapel. A dedicated room details a lot of interesting information about the frescoes.
From here, visitors can easily access the Guia Lighthouse. Behind the fort is a short tunnel you can walk through, and afterwards, you will be treated to breathtaking city views. If you don’t feel like being on foot so much, you can also take the option of riding the cable car; the station is located by the Flora Garden entrance on Rua da Ferreiro.
The Chapel Of Our Lady Of Guia is a must-see while in Macau.
