Guia Fortress

English: Guia Fortress, Portuguese: Fortaleza da Guia, Traditional: 東望洋炮台, Simplified: 东望洋炮台

The Guia Fortress is one of Macau’s iconic historic sites, found on Guia Hill, the highest point in the country.

Built in the 17th century, it was once a colonial military fort that was beneficial in protecting the country from the 1622 Dutch invasion.

The fortress is designed with a unique trapezoid shape and covers an area of around 800 square meters. Around the area, you will also see other old military attractions, such as a powder magazine, tower, and barracks.

Once you arrive at the fortress, you will see some old typhoon signals that were once hoisted up during impending storms. A small information gallery is found within the fortress, where you can learn more about the complex and the chapel.

The Guia Fortress is also home to the Chapel of Our Lady of Guia, constructed in 1622. One of the many reasons the chapel is so amazing is that it has retained almost all of its original design. The highlights here are the colourful Chinese and Portuguese frescoes, considered among the most important in Asia.

Beside the chapel is the lighthouse, built around 1865, which is the oldest modern lighthouse known in China, though it is only open on Saturdays and Sundays in July.

The best way to get to the fortress and the chapel is by taking the scenic cable car that transports you from the Flora Gardens entrance. However, if you would like to burn some calories while enjoying a view of the highest point in the peninsula, there is also the option of walking up. Either way, you will be treated to spectacular vistas you won’t find anywhere else.

The Guia Fortress and its surrounding historical structures are a must-visit for tourists.
