A-Ma Cultural Village

English: A-Ma Cultural Village, Portuguese: Aldeia Cultural de A-Má, Traditional: 媽祖文化村, Simplified: 妈祖文化村

The A-Ma Cultural Village is an important religious attraction in Coloane.

The 7,000 square meter large Buddhist/Taoist temple complex was built in 2003 in honour of A-Ma, the Goddess of Seafarers.

Construction for the village began in 2001 during the Chung Yeung Festival. Today, the complex, whose design was inspired by the Qing Dynasty, has become a significant place of worship for the millions of A-Ma devotees around the world. Each year, thousands of them make the pilgrimage to this complex to say their prayers.

The temple features a drum tower, bell tower, dressing hall, marble altar, museum, and shops. Patrons need to travel up 6 flights of stairs to get here; each row has been designed with intricate Chinese auspicious patterns, including the double lion, roaring tiger, double phoenix, and five cranes.

Around the A-Ma Cultural Village, there is a park where visitors can relax afterwards. Don’t forget to pay homage to the 20-meter-high statue of the goddess, which is made up of white jade pieces and weighs more than 500 tons. This majestic figure can be seen from afar as she looks to the sea.

It is estimated that the goddess has over 200 million devotees from all around the world, though most of them are concentrated in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Fujian Province. However, many come from places as far as the United States and Europe.

The temple is open to the public all day, free of charge, though the Tianhou Palace is open from 8:30am to 6pm only. Every 30 minutes, a free shuttle takes visitors from the road to the temple, though a public bus can also take you from various points in Macau to the temple.

The A-Ma Cultural Village is an attraction not to be missed while in Macau.
