A Symphony of Lights

A Symphony of Lights is one of the most famous sights in Hong Kong.

This light show illuminates the glittering skyscrapers each night, which is best viewed anywhere along the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade or in one of the high restaurants around the city.

The light show has been an iconic attraction since 2004; a true representation of the vibrant energy and culture of Hong Kong. By 2017, the show was taken to a new level when the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra created a musical score for it using traditional Chinese instruments including the Erhu, to create a truly unique sound that mirrors the local culture.

Today, the show is known as the biggest permanent light and music show in the world, featuring dozens of buildings and highlighting three attractions each evening starting at 8pm.

The Symphony of Lights is more than just a show; a story is told behind its themes. During the first scene, which represents awakening, laser light lines light up the buildings to indicate the city’s birth and continuous growth. This is followed by scene two, or energy, where gradient lights are cast from bottom to top, changing the colours of the buildings as the laser lights dance in the sky. The third scene is heritage, where Chinese music complements the red and gold lights along the shores of Victoria Harbour.

In scene 4, partnership, the lights bounce off one another and interact; it represents the cooperation between the Kowloon Peninsula and Hong Kong Island for a bright future. Lastly, the finale features a kaleidoscope-like light together with flying lights.

The finale is a celebration of all the people working together. Aside from the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, other places where you can get the best views of the show include the Avenue of Stars, the Wan Chai Promenade, or on a cruise ship.
