Over 60,000 documents, more than 10,000 publications, and 70,000 photographs are stored here. A majority of the archives are still paper-based, with the earliest ones dating back to 1630.
The Archives of Macau usually obtains its collections from various public services, though individuals and private organisations donate many. This place is highly recommended for visitors who are keen to learn about the fascinating and colourful history of Macau.
Other than viewing any items of interest or the library, the building itself is interesting to explore because it’s in a colonial-style mansion that has undergone restoration thanks to the Government of Macau.
After spending an hour or so here, take a stroll to discover some tourist sights nearby. The Victory Garden is only a few minutes away; it’s a small park established to pay tribute to the Portuguese’s victory over the Dutch in 1622. A statue in the centre of the park commemorates this event, and beautiful flowers surround the benches and pathway.
