It is among the most significant cathedrals for the people of Macau, not just a place of prayer and worship. Several celebrations and big events of a religious nature are usually held here. In addition, the cathedral’s design has many notable elements.
Upon arriving at the Cathedral of the Nativity of Our Lady, one can’t help but admire the stunning facade. There is a small fountain as well as a cross fronting the facade. Meanwhile, its main building features one floor, a wooden truss, and a sloping roof, reflective of typical neoclassical design. Its main body is oblong-shaped and has a transept with a chapel on either side. Wooden folding screens in Portuguese design are found in the Cathedral entrance, while a wonderful shade of light green graces the interiors.
The main altar is only simple but solemn, with stained glass windows behind it. There are some Catholic monuments and relics that are also stored within the cathedral, including some religious paintings such as the image of St. John’s Baptism and that of Japanese Catholics who were crucified in Nagasaki. The bell tower is a highlight of the cathedral, located right by the main building. It stands 13 meters high, with a flat roof and three floors. The bell constructed in Britain is rung during important religious events such as Feast Days, masses, weddings, and the like.
The Cathedral of the Nativity of Our Lady is a major religious attraction in Macau.
