Gate of Understanding

English: Gate of Understanding, Portuguese: Porta do Entendimento, Traditional: 融和門

The Gate of Understanding (Porta do Entendimento) is one of many monuments in Macau that represent the friendship between China and Portugal, while the sky and sea behind it represent endless boundaries between the two nations.

This is among the largest monuments, standing 40 meters high and located near the Inner Harbour.

The structure was built in the early 1990s, comprising two flat concrete slabs that are abstract in design. Depending on where you stand as you look at the monument, some of the slabs may look intertwined, giving a kind of optical illusion. It’s located across Sai Van Bridge on a small artificial island.

The best place to see the Gate of Understanding is from the footpath that runs by the harbour on the Macau Peninsula, though it can also be easily seen from vehicles crossing the Sai Van Bridge. Also known as the Porta do Entendimento, it’s recommended to appreciate this attraction from afar safely because there have been instances when some granite slabs have fallen to the ground in the past. After visiting this attraction, visitors can spend the rest of their time exploring Sai Van Lake, one of the two man-made lakes in the country.

The lake is especially popular for scenic running circuits; the paths are pleasant, and you can enjoy the stunning water views. Macau Tower can also be seen quite well from here. Even though you aren’t here for running, the lakeside provides a lovely area from where you can enjoy a stroll. You can head north using the lake path, which will take you to Av. Panoramica, and from here, you can visit other popular tourist landmarks, which include the A-Ma Temple and the Maritime Museum.

The Gate of Understanding is a historic landmark you shouldn’t miss here.
