The story of the pawnshop begins in 1917 when Kou Ho Ning, a local merchant, established it. The Republic of China was only beginning during this time, and the Qing Dynasty had just ended. Many significant changes were going on at the time, such as with the preserved shop counter, the incredible storehouse that looks like a fortress, and the amazing pawn records that are still intact. The pawn industry declined in the early 1990s, which resulted in its closure in 1993.

Eventually, the structure underwent restoration by the Cultural Affairs Bureau in 2000 and was converted into the Heritage Exhibition Of A Traditional Pawnshop Business that we know today. Visitors can come for a glimpse of what it was like to run a pawnshop business back in that time. It is now renowned as one of the top museums to visit while in Macau. In fact, it was given an Honourable Mention for the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage in 2004.

Going on a guided tour is recommended to make the most of your museum visit. These take place on Saturdays, from 3 to 5PM. Groups can also book special guided tours by appointment. The museum is open to the public from 10:30am to 7pm every day, except on the first Mondays of the month when they are closed.
