The world-famous bakery was started by Andrew Stow, an Englishman and a pharmacist who made his way to Macao in 1979 when there was an opportunity to work here. By 1984, he opened Tropical Health Foods Ltd. with his girlfriend at the time, using his pharmaceutical background to develop health foods and supplements for the Macau market. Afterwards, he worked at the Hyatt Regency Hotel to support his business, where he learned about restaurants and cooking.

In the 1980s, he travelled to Portugal and was inspired by the delicious local egg tarts that were being sold there. By 1989, he could tweak a recipe for Portuguese egg tarts to lend some British flavour to it, and his iconic pastry was born. He opened the first bakery in Coloane Village and the Lord Stows Bakery & Cafe. The Venetian Macao followed, among many other branches around the country.

Whether it’s your first time here or not, snacking on egg tarts has always been considered an integral part of the travel experience to Macau. The cafe sells them by piece or in boxes, perfect if you want to enjoy some at home or give them as gifts.
