Lou Lim Ieoc Garden

English: Lou Lim Ieoc Garden, Portuguese: Jardim de Lou Lim Ioc, Traditional: 盧廉若公園, Simplified: 卢廉若公园

The Lou Lim Ieoc Garden is a true gem among the many gardens found in Macau.

It belonged to a prominent merchant named Lou Kau as part of his mansion home, though it was turned over to the local government by 1974 to be used as a public park.

Construction of the garden began in 1904, and it took an astonishing 21 years to complete. It was only a vegetable plot during its humble beginnings until Lou Lim Ieoc purchased it to transform it into a private garden.

It’s now the largest garden in the country, with an area of 1.78 hectares and many ornamental and decorative features to admire. The design was inspired by the Suzhou Lion Grove Garden, one of Suzhou’s most famous gardens.

The Lou Lim Ieoc Garden was also considered an entertainment garden and remains among the top tourist attractions here. Some notable features include the bamboo groves, oriental pavilions, corridors, green lotus in the ponds, waterfalls, and banyan trees. However, the waterside pavilion is the centrepiece of this garden.

While most of the elements here are distinctly Chinese, one can still notice Western aspects, such as the white European carvings on top of the porticoes and the light-yellow wall, a colour deeply embedded in Portuguese culture.

The garden is a great place to wind down and relax. The afternoons and early evenings are tranquil, and there are many picturesque spots where you can take photographs. This destination is rich in history and culture, with interesting stories to tell, but it’s also a tranquil space for getting away from the city.

Entrance is free of charge, and it’s open throughout the year.
