Macao Museum

English: Macao Museum, Portuguese: Museu de Macau, Traditional: 澳門博物館, Simplified: 澳门博物馆

The Macao Museum (Museu de Macau) is the largest museum in the country.

While there are numerous different types of museums around Macau, what makes this special is that it only has one focus: the history of various nationalities and the cosmopolitan culture that makes the country what it is today.

Construction for the museum began in 1996 and was open to the public by 1998. Today, it spans three floors and covers 30,100 square feet of exhibition space.

Several displays can change every few months or seasonally, and the focus usually surrounds the history of its people, art, archaeology, and livelihood. Given that Macau’s history spans some 400 years under the Portuguese colonial rule, there is certainly a lot to discover and learn about how it’s shaped Macau today.

The Macao Museum has displays divided into each floor. On the first floor, you will learn all about the original civilisations and their origins from the Neolithic period to the 17th century. You’ll also learn about the Golden Period of Macau, the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and the cultures that shaped Europe in early history. Meanwhile, the second floor is where you can find information on religious changes, displays on architecture and urban planning, contemporary art, and more.

Last but not least, the third floor is dedicated to contemporary Macau. Learn about the writers whose lives and works were greatly influenced or tied to the country.

Other fascinating displays throughout these exhibits are the entertainment and industry sections, religious etiquettes, calligraphy, sculptures, and paintings.

They are all organised neatly, making it a joy to spend a few hours leisurely strolling around the museum as you soak up knowledge.

The Macao Museum is situated on the hill of Mount Fortress.
