Macau Islamic Mosque and Cemetery

English: Macau Islamic Mosque and Cemetery, Portuguese: Mesquita e Cemitério de Macau, Traditional: 澳門伊斯蘭清真寺及墳場, Simplified: 澳门伊斯兰清真寺及坟场

The Macau Islamic Mosque and Cemetery is a historic landmark built sometime in the early 1980’s.

It is the only mosque and Muslim cemetery in the country, making it a vital foundation for the Muslim community.

Muslims who were working for the Portuguese army, who were recruited from faraway regions such as Mumbai and Goa, were believed to have been responsible for building the mosque. Meanwhile, the cemetery located adjacent to the mosque is where many Muslims and Parsi are buried. Many of the graves are more than a hundred years old.

The Macau Islamic Mosque and Cemetery is another testament to the cultural tolerance of the country for many centuries. Additionally, it serves as proof of the Islamic population, though Islam didn’t arrive in China until AD 650.

Today, many worshippers visit the mosque, especially on Sundays, which is their day off. The mosque gets particularly busy during special occasions such as Eid al-Adha or weddings. Other activities conducted within the mosque are Islamic studies or reading of the Quran.

Whether you are Muslim or not, visiting this destination is worthwhile. It’s also situated in a tranquil, wooded area. Be sure to observe silence because it’s still primarily a place of worship.

If you want to see other attractions nearby, the Museum of Communications is only a few minutes away. This educational facility has something to offer all ages as you can learn about historic ways people used telecommunications and electronics throughout the year. The interactive and fun displays can be appreciated even by children. Its other amenities include a gift shop that sells interesting souvenirs such as stamps and unique collectibles.
