Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro

English: Almeida Ribeiro Avenue, Portuguese: Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, Traditional: 亞美打利庇盧大馬路, Simplified: 亚美打利庇卢大马路

The Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro is the primary street in the heart of Macau.

It’s the busiest street in town, though it has a colourful history since it was constructed in 1920.

Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, Macau, Landmarks, Buildings, Attractions

The road stretches from the inner harbour to the outer harbour and passes an old residential part of the town home to many colourful shophouses. During its early years, it used to be nothing more than a small alley, but some buildings and hills around the area were demolished to create a larger and newer road. It has become a tourist attraction through the years because numerous Chinese and European homes are found around it, many of which are still well-preserved from the 1920s.

The Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, also known as San Ma Lo, is a great place to explore many historic landmarks. Start at the Largo do Senado, or Senado Square, a beautiful town square that links Largo do Sao Domingos to the San Ma Lo. Aside from drawing tourists, many locals enjoy frequenting this area because of its laid-back atmosphere. You will find a fountain in the centre, and there are many shops and cafes throughout the area. Numerous public and community events take place here throughout the year.

Another attraction nearby is the Leal Senado Building, though it’s more popularly known as the IAM Building today. It was built in 1784 as Macau’s first municipal chamber. Its neo-classical design has been retained, and it’s worth exploring for appreciating the courtyard garden, ceremonial meeting room, stunning carved library, and chapel. You’ll also notice the Hotel Central on the road, an 11-storey property formerly the President Hotel.

The Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro is a historical site in Macau that you shouldn’t miss.
