Vasco da Gama Garden

English: Vasco da Gama Garden, Portuguese: Jardim de Vasco da Gama, Traditional: 華士古達嘉馬花園, Simplified: 华士古达嘉马花园

The Vasco da Gama Garden (Jardim de Vasco da Gama) is a historic garden in Macau.

It was established during the end of the 19th century, part of the Avenida Vasco da Gama constructed in 1898 to pay tribute to the 400th anniversary of Vasco da Gama’s arrival in India.

Today, the park is one of the many beautiful small parks around town. It has numerous facilities for recreation and enjoyment, including a small kids’ playground and park benches. A monument commemorating the famous Portuguese navigator is also found here.

Some renovations have been done in recent years to improve its appearance for the convenience of visitors, including a wave-shaped lake located on the lower level.

After a short stop at the Vasco da Gama Garden, you can visit other tourist spots that are a few minutes away. The Tap Seac Gallery is only a few blocks by foot; it’s among the most prestigious galleries in Macau. The gallery was established in 2003 by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the government, to promote the arts and public appreciation for them. You’ll also get a glimpse into the typical residence of a wealthy family in Macau during its older days.

The Cathedral Square nearby is highly recommended too. Anyone can appreciate the beauty and elegance of the structures in this square, which features numerous significant monuments.

Then there is also the Teatro Dom Pedro V, the oldest theatre of Macau, built in 1858. It is also China’s first-ever Western-style theatre, designed by Pedro Marques. Through the decades, it has witnessed many important cultural shows, especially concerts and the opera. The government eventually restored it to the beauty that it is today.

The Vasco da Gama Garden and nearby sights are lovely destinations in this neighbourhood.
