Macau Information, Fun Facts, Tourist Info & Guide, Tourism Map
Perhaps one of the most significant facts about Macau is that it was the last European colony in the region. It was also the first and last colony of Europe in Asia since it was under the Portuguese occupation for 442 years. By 1999, Portugal handed Macau back to China. This explains the Portuguese colonial buildings and the beautiful architecture still well-preserved throughout the country.
There is also exciting Macau information to know when it comes to travel and adventure. For one, it’s home to the Highest Commercial Bungy Jump in the World, verified by the Guinness World Records. If you’re feeling brave, check it out at none other than the Skypark Macau Tower, where the 233-meter-long bungy jump will have your adrenaline pumping like no other!
In addition, the world’s longest sea bridge, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, connects Macau to China and Hong Kong. The bridge is 55 kilometres long – 20 times longer than the world-famous San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge.
It’s also interesting to know that Macau is the world’s most densely populated city. In 2020, the population density was pegged at 19,737 per square kilometre, which is extremely dense given that the country is just 13 square miles.
Furthermore, Macau has been given the nickname “Las Vegas of the East” and “Monte Carlo of the Orient” due to the high concentration of casinos here. More than half of the country’s GDP comes from gambling, six times more than Las Vegas casinos generate. That’s because gambling has been legal here since the 1850s, and it’s the best place in Asia for those who enjoy it.
These Macau facts and information can help you appreciate the many unique facets of this territory during your trip.
